Precious Metals: The Ultimate Costs of Gold and Silver Investing

“Should I sell my silver now?”

My condolences go out to the family of Pete Marek whose untimely death in an accident at the Lucky Friday silver mine in North Idaho is a reminder to all of us that extracting minerals from the earth comes with a very high toll. There are untold tragedies occurring in mining operations around the globe. Sometimes there are heroic rescues and we get to celebrate. But too often there is no celebration. Only heartache.

do not enter mineI dabbled in silver investing years ago when I was a newlywed. It was in the late 80’s when the precious metals market was active. I got caught up in the excitement that a dollar increase in an ounce of silver can cause. It can make one giddy. Over the years, I’ve struggled with the conflicts that investing in silver caused in my conscience and last year I almost completely divested all my holdings. As I watch the price of precious metals surge, I have to admit I miss that excitement. But in the current situation, I can see that there is really no reason to be celebrating. The dollar is struggling and speculators are getting fat.
And miners are dying.

The very first case that the U.S. Supreme Court heard in 2009 involved a gold mining operation in Alaska. The Court allowed the owners of the Kensington gold mine to dump mine tailings directly into lower Slate Lake, essentially killing all fish and life in the lake. They had to get around EPA regulations by getting the Army Corps of Engineers to rename the “tailings” to “fill” so they could legally dump them right into the lake. They propose to clean it up after they extract all the gold after 10 years or so. Then they can simply replenish the lake with fish. Yeah, right.

We depend on metals for so many things in our daily lives. Silver has many uses, including being an effective water purifier. That is what makes the Katadyn silver impregnated water filters so popular. I continue to be blown away by the demand for the Katadyn Pocket microfilter. Despite its steady rise in price, the Katadyn company can’t keep up with demand. That’s very telling about the value of water.

It’s important to put what we value in perspective. Let’s mine responsibly so that miners’ lives are not put in jeopardy, local people are not exposed to unhealthy emissions, and we don’t accelerate our destruction of the earth in our pursuit of treasure. In the end, things like family, friends, shelter, healthy food, and yes, clean water, are what matter most.

Hydro-Fracking: Is Our Water Safe? What you should know

Hydraulic fracturing is the new oil boom. This controversial process to extract natural gas from deep below the earth’s surface has been expanding at breakneck speed, almost as if gas companies are racing against an invisible clock. Perhaps they are concerned that their dirty little secrets are becoming big daily news reports, and the dirt is piling up.

Take the recent nightmare that a young mom from Granville Summit, PA is experiencing.

29-year-old Crystal Stroud wasn’t fazed by the change in color or odor of her family’s tap water shortly after a gas company set up a natural gas drilling rig near her home. She naively believed  the company’s claims that fracking was safe and that ground water contamination wasn’t a risk. But when her hair started to fall out and she became very ill, she soon regretted her decision to drink from the tap. She sent water samples to a lab and the results were alarming. According to the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, “The water test revealed high doses of lead, strontium, barium, arsenic, radium and other chemicals, she said, and she immediately stopped drinking the water, but the damage had been done.” Read more about Crystal’s nightmare here.

The fracking process depends on very large quantities of water that are mixed with a proprietary blend of chemicals and forced deep into the earth to aid in the release of natural gas. The resulting huge amounts of contaminated water are a waste product and, despite what gas companies will tell you, have been know to contaminate ground water nearby. Unfortunately for the public, the proprietary nature of the process prevents disclosure of the chemicals that the gas companies use. Even after local wells have been contaminated with toxic cocktails that not only release vapors, but can actually be ignited into flames at the tap, property owners are often left with catastrophic medical problems, worthless real estate, and few answers or accountability.  This horror story apparently has been replayed in communities across the country where hydro-frack drilling rigs are sprouting up all over, or as in the case this past week in Towanda, PA, spilling all over.

I will be introducing a new product in the very near future that I am very excited about. This countertop filter is capable of removing radioactive particles including iodine-131 and cesium-137. It also removes strontium-90 and radium-226. People concerned about radioactive emissions from the Fukushima reactor will be delighted with the protection this filter will provide, and I am hoping that those contending with contaminated water from fracking will be too.  I am still learning more about its capabilities, but I am encouraged with what I have seen so far. It’s brand new and still in testing mode, but I hope to have them available soon.

Check back for updates and in the mean time, check out my Highwater Filters store for the best selection of Katadyn portable water filter products (including our best selling Katadyn Pocket) and our brand new non-electric Lifesaver distiller kits.

Thanks for stopping by!

Drinking Water Distillation Pros and Cons

Update: January 10, 2013 The Vortex Non-electric Water Distiller Kit by Highwater Filters is now available. We have both kits installed in 5 gallon buckets and DIY kits available.

If you visit any online forums that focus on emergency preparedness, survivalism, or health issues, you are sure to find many posts that advocate for water distillation as the only method for water purification. The claims are not without merit. Water distillation works on a basic principle. By boiling contaminated water you can effectively remove the impurities through the method of condensation, and then convert the resulting water vapor, minus the contaminants, back to a liquid form.

LifeSaver Portable Water DistillerAccording to the Minnesota Cooperative Extension website, “distilling removes about 99.5% of the impurities from the original water. Distillers are commonly used for removing nitrate, bacteria, sodium, hardness (dissolved solids), most organic compounds, heavy metals and radionucleides from water.”
The “pros” are obvious in that distilling is very effective in removing almost all contaminants from water. It’s a relatively simple technology and there are distillers available that don’t have many parts. Water can be distilled at home and is a way to purify many conditions of water including sea water, ditch water, sewer water, and other polluted water sources.
Before running out and buying a distiller (or surfing the web and clicking “buy it now”), you should make sure you consider any “cons” that distilled water has. One of the chief complaints people voice is that required minerals are removed from the water during the distilling process. Our good health depends on minerals found in the water we drink. Many people take supplements to offset this loss. This added expense should be factored in if you are concerned about costs.

Announcement May 15. 3 day flash sale happening right now on the Life Saver Distillers.
You should also consider energy requirements. The distillation process is energy intensive and electric distillers will use considerable juice. Estimates of electricity usage for a family of four range from $275 to $400 a year (MN Cooperative Extension). Non-electric distillers are a good option, but of course require a heat source to boil water.
Another “con” is that flow rates are limited with water distillation. Batch distillers, which require a chamber that water is poured into, can produce anywhere from 3 to 10 gallons of purified water per day. Although limited, this can be adequate for a family of four.

As I considered products to add to Highwater Filters webstore, I looked for water treatments that were in demand and practical for personal use. I am committed to offering alternatives to energy sucking technologies. I want to offer innovative ways to help you prepare for emergency situations or unhealthy conditions. As I searched for a high quality non-electric water distiller, I was excited to discover the Lifesaver Non-electric Portable Water Distiller kits made by Conquest International, LLC. They are well-made, of food grade stainless steel, and are manufactured in the USA. They are reasonably priced and just might be what you are looking for if your water is unpure, or if you want to be prepared for any emergency.
