Susquehanna River named “Most Endangered.”

Wow, I must have been too busy last week to notice the email I received from American Rivers that announced the “Most Endangered Rivers of 2011.” I received another email today urging me to take action to help protect our rivers. I was shocked to see that the Susquehanna River that flows through New York State, Pennsylvania, and Maryland was rated #1 for 2011. But with the threats to water throughout the Marcellus Shale formation from natural gas extracting, it really shouldn’t be that big of a surprise.

The Susquehanna River is no stranger to me. I have lived near its shores in both Plattsburgh, NY and Binghamton, NY, back in the late 70’s to mid 80’s. But of a greater concern is that my folks live on the Isle of Que in Selinsgrove, PA. They moved there 30 years ago. It lies just off shore in the Susquehanna River. In addition, I have a sister who lives with her family on the Isle of Que and my younger brother and his family live in Selinsgrove, too. So this hits home for me.

As I stated in my previous blog post on Hydro-fracking, this method of energy production comes with considerable costs. It wastes and contaminates large amounts of water, and numerous cases of leaks and ground water contamination illustrate the risks to environment and the health of people living in the vicinity of extraction sites. That the gas companies use the mask of “proprietary information” to preclude themselves from disclosing the chemicals that are used in the fracking process is disconcerting, at the very best.

A glimmer of hope may be on the horizon as the Wall Street Journal reported in today’s edition that:

“On Wednesday, shareholders at three gas producers, including Exxon Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp., will vote on whether the companies should provide more information about the risk of air and water pollution, lawsuits and possible harm to their reputations from an increasingly widespread drilling practice.”

I unfortunately couldn’t access the entire article because I am not a subscriber but if you subscribe, you can read more here.

As the truth becomes more apparent to the risks of hydro-fracking and the eventual costs to stockholders is considered, we can only hope that the voices of reason will be able to help stockholders realize that the risks, and expense, outweigh the benefits they may be currently enjoying.

We can only hope.

T.R.A.P. Radiation Filter Performance Test Video

Here is a video of the performance test of the T.R.A.P cartridge filter for removal of radioactive particles from water. Conducted by Dr. Cindy Schreier of Prima Environmental Labs in El Dorado Hills, CA.

Jim Settle of NuWater Concepts, developer of the T.R.A.P. filter shows us the inside of Prima Labs during a portion of the testing process.

Test results are still pending and will be posted here and on Highwater Filter’s store website. We are confident that the TRAP will prove to be the best method for filtering out radioactive particles.

Here’s the video:

Dr. Helen Caldicott on Nuclear Fallout in Japan: “Unsafe at Any Dose.”

Dr. Helen Caldicott is arguably the world’s leading expert on the effects of radioactivity on the human body. She is the founder of  Physicians for Social Responsibility and she has been a relentless voice of reason for decades. Her dire warnings about the dangers of nuclear power have rendered many, many people speechless.

In her April 30th  Op-Ed article in the New York Times (Unsafe at Any Dose), Dr. Caldicott puts the recent nuclear accident at Fukushima, Japan in clear perspective. She states: “doctors know that there is no such thing as a safe dose of radiation, and that radiation is cumulative.”

Dr. Caldicott describes the cancers and miscarriages that occurred, and continue to occur long after the Chernobyl nuclear accident. She explains how leukemia can take 5-10 years to emerge, but most cancers take 15-60 years. She cites a publication from the New York Academy of Sciences that says over a million cases of cancer deaths and diseases have resulted since Chernobyl.

Leaders in the nuclear power industry and some government officials may downplay the significance of elevated emissions of radioactive isotopes. There are good reasons they want us in the dark about the dangers.

It’s people like Dr. Helen Caldicott who know the truth about the hazards of nuclear power and nuclear war and are not afraid to speak out. She is a true planetary hero.

Incidently, if you know anything about Dr. Helen Caldicott, she has really been a beacon in the anti-nuclear movement for many, many years. When I was a member of the Environmental Action Committee as a college student at Plattsburgh State University of New York in the early 80’s, we had Dr. Caldicott speak at our annual Towards Tomorrow Festival. The National Film Board of Canada came down from Montreal and filmed her speech. It is forever documented in the film “If You Love This Planet.” It won an Academy Award for short documentary and required a disclaimer/trailer in the U.S. that it was deemed propaganda by the US government!

I was in the audience in the film.

I could go on about Dr. Helen Caldicott. She is my hero!

If You Love This Planet

Thanks for reading!
